The 16th UN Climate Change Conference of Youth (COY)

This conference which takes place right before COP26, brings together young delegates from all around the world and serves as a space for capacity building, networking and policy training.

One of the major outputs of COY16 is the policy document crafted by youth voices globally, the Global Youth Statement, which tackles various topics. Under the demand "Politics and Policy making", they demand governments:

"To implement legal sanctions for actions and crimes against the environment (including ecocide), especially those coming from big corporations and fossil-fuel companies."

‘Achieving sustainability: the role of corporations, strategic litigation and ecocide law’.

Business must transition to more climate-friendly practices. Civil litigation is already being used to make corporations and governments take action on climate. We examine how business is adapting and consider established and new legal approaches for guiding businesses as they transition to more sustainable behaviours.

The production, consumption and disposal of apparel threatens environmental and social justice on a devastatingly large scale. Can the cultural concept of ‘fashion’ be transformed? And can this industry rise creatively to the challenge of an international crime of ecocide on the horizon? How could the law be welcomed as a guardrail and guidance system for net zero apparel?

How can the profound traditions and practices of sacred guardianship be respected/included in the existing dominant legal system? Independent event organised by Stop Ecocide International & Ecocide Alliance: ‘Ecocide: uniting behind a law to protect people & planet’.

The movement for the recognition of ecocide is a golden opportunity to unite all those who work tirelessly for the protection of climate, the environment, and our basic human rights.

Recognising ecocide as a crime at the international level can help support all of us: making big polluters accountable, setting healthy parameters for policy and corporate practice, offering local and indigenous communities a new legal tool, protecting future generations… the list goes on. As political and civil momentum grows on this issue, the time is right to join forces. Join us to discuss how we can work together and how this law can support you as an elected representative, an NGO, a climate activist, and so many more. Let’s take this to the next level!
