We were delighted that Stop Ecocide International, and our Stop Ecocide Foundation, had a very strong presence during COP27 in November 2022.

Stop Ecocide Foundation had a pavilion (P42), and an official side event at COP27, co-hosted with The Republic of Vanuatu.

We were also involved in events at other pavilions and were delighted to be supporting events organised by Youth for Ecocide Law.

This event was an in-person youth-led panel event, with an interactive audience Q&A session, reflecting on how international law could provide powerful levers for positive change for our future. It showcased two international legal avenues to address the climate and ecological crises: criminalising ecocide at the International Criminal Court and seeking an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice.

This in-person Tedx-style session featured a speech and poetry intervention on ecocide law, art and protest from Léa Weimann, eco-activist, student & spokesperson for Youth for Ecocide Law.

Organised by: The National Council of Swedish Youth Organizations (LSU) & NCM

The Global and the Nordic youth statements are clear: Youth want to see a system change and an Ecocide Law. The event will contain a panel discussion followed by an interactive part. The discussion will demonstrate how we (youth) have seen a lack of leadership from the Nordic countries and how we as youth make sure to hold the Nordic region accountable to ensure a better future for our generation.

Recognising “ecocide” - severe and either widespread or long-term harm to nature - as a crime at the International Criminal Court could provide a legal guardrail to steer us back from the precipice by setting an outer boundary to deter, prevent and sanction the worst threats to ecosystems and keystone species.

A clear legal advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice on the responsibilities of states with respect to climate change could set out what citizens should expect from their policy-makers and why.

Together these avenues can frame the duties and responsibilities that could bridge to a liveable world for the children of all species, including our own.

Recognizing ecocide - severe and either widespread or long-term harm to nature - as a crime would address a fundamental root cause of climate and ecological crisis. It could provide a legal guardrail to deter, prevent and sanction the worst threats to vital carbon sinks, ecosystems and keystone species, while strengthening existing laws and creating the necessary parameters for effective climate action. 

Bangladesh is an active participant in this growing global conversation, along with other climate-vulnerable states.

Jojo Mehta, Stop Ecocide International Co-Founder and Executive Director, spoke at this event - part of the Futures Lab series, hosted by the UN Climate Change High-Level Champions, Nigel Topping and Dr. Mahmoud Mohieldin.

This Futures Lab 'Restructuring the Law for a Net Zero Future' explored how the law can better adapt to become flexible and a key driver of - rather than responder to or blocker of - climate action and bold, imaginative ideas for systems change aimed at accelerating climate action and catalysing the transition to a regenerative and just world.

An international criminal law framework to deter and prevent severe and widespread or long-term destruction of ecosystems - now increasingly known as “ecocide” - could provide a sorely needed guardrail and guidance system to catalyse strategic change across industry and policy.

This Official COP27 side event explored how this legal initiative is rapidly gathering momentum and cross-sector support around the globe, as a way to reframe our relationship with the living world around us from one of harm to one of harmony.
