BUILDING ALLIANCES IN THE FACE OF ECOCIDE

Friday, Dec 6th | 2019 10.00 - 17.00

A workshop intended to explore the reality of Ecocide in various regions of the world, the requirements for amending the Rome Statute to include Ecocide Crime, and the nature of alliances that could help move this amendment forward.

There will be expert facilitation throughout the workshop to enable full involvement of all participants, so that the outcomes from the day include strong strategies for ongoing alliance- building and positive commitments towards addressing the missing crime of Ecocide.

We kindly invite you to register for the event. Due to limited capacity, we apologise in advance if we are unable to secure you a seat. However, we will be more than happy to connect with you at another occasion.

“Recognising that there is no one silver bullet to the planet’s climate, biodiversity and ecological crisis, environmentalists and climate activists worldwide have been creative in their approach, succeeding with some legal avenues and failing in others.
During the first half of the event, we will hear from those whose lives and livelihoods have suffered from serious loss, damage and/or destruction of their ecosystems, including climate and cultural heritage.
The second half of the event will explore the diplomatic, legal and civil/political avenues conducive to establishing ecocide crime. Areas to be addressed include: 1) procedures for amending the Statute, the stages and what is required; 2) what alliances of states, NGOs and civil groups could usefully support the process; and 3) creative strategies for ongoing alliance building.
