Description: Join Stop Ecocide co-founder Jojo Mehta and leading experts to learn about emerging global movements to create ecocentric laws, with a focus on including "ecocide" as a crime in the Rome Statute and passing laws against ecocide across the globe. The webinar will also explore the connection between ecocide and the "rights of nature" movement, which seeks to establish nature as a subject of rights. Free and open to all!
SPEAKERS
Jojo Mehta: With degrees from Oxford and London Universities and a background in communication, entrepreneurship and on-the-ground environmental activism, Jojo Mehta co-founded UK non-profit Ecological Defence Integrity with barrister and legal pioneer the late Polly Higgins in 2017 to support the establishment of ecocide as a crime at the International Criminal Court. To crowdfund for this they launched the public-facing campaign Stop Ecocide, where supporters declare themselves Earth Protectors and contribute to a globally validated Trust Fund. Jojo is key spokeswoman for the work and overall co-ordinator of international legal/diplomatic and campaign teams.
Herman Greene: Herman Greene, JD, DMin, is president of the Center for Ecozoic Societies in Chapel Hill, NC. He serves on the Boards of Toward Ecological Civilization and the International Process Network, and on the Boards of Advisors of the Center for Process Studies and the Institute for the Post-Modern Development of China. He holds graduate degrees in Spirituality and Sustainability, United Theological Seminary, 2004; Law, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, 1979; Ministry, University of Chicago Divinity School, 1970; and Political Science, Stanford University, 1967. He is the author of the forthcoming book, The Promise of Ecological Civilization.
Anastacia Greene,
Immigration Clinical Fellow with the Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Clinic (IPVAC) at the Levin College of Law in Gainesville, Florida.
She previously served as the Supervising Attorney at John Marshall Law School’s Pro Bono Clinic, where she taught seminars on foreclosure law, transgender law, and litigation practices. Greene has focused her legal career in the public interest sector, and has worked as an attorney representing low-income clients with legal aid agencies.
Grant Wilson: Grant Wilson is the Executive Director & Directing Attorney of leading Rights of Nature organization Earth Law Center. He is an expert in international law, environmental law, and ecological-based laws. Over the last fifteen years, he has fought for the health of rivers, forests, and other ecosystems across the world. He has helped write numerous laws recognizing nature as a subject of rights. Prior to Earth Law Center, Grant led environmental law and policy campaigns throughout the world—in Kenya, Hungary, and elsewhere. Grant earned a J.D. with a Certificate in Environmental and Natural Resources Law from Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon.
