Universities are at the forefront of driving global change.
As the world’s leading knowledge hubs, they bring together the brightest minds to shape the ideas and solutions that will define our collective future. With their trusted authority, groundbreaking research, and far-reaching influence across students, staff and policymakers, universities have a unique power to inspire action and drive the transformative change our world urgently needs.
The recognition of ecocide as a crime under international law is a logical and necessary step in the evolution of environmental governance. As human activity continues to push the planet to its limits, we need legal frameworks that hold us accountable and offer real protection for the environment. Businesses, scientists, lawyers and faith groups have already united behind this cause— and now, it’s time for the academic community to take a stand.
The Universities for Ecocide Law initiative invites academic institutions to become champions of this historic movement by embracing the criteria outlined below. By standing with this movement, universities can amplify their commitment to a just, sustainable future—one where knowledge translates into real-world impact.
These criteria have been carefully developed by Stop Ecocide International’s Student Ambassadors, in close consultation with university staff members, ensuring they reflect the collective vision of the academic community and are as follows.
