Global Walk to Stop Ecocide launches on Earth Day 2022 to Support Making Ecocide An International Crime
As momentum grows to make “ecocide” (the destruction of nature) an international crime, Stop Ecocide International (SEI) in association with the Stop Ecocide US Allies are launching a global Walk To Stop Ecocide, in partnership with CharityMiles.org.
This 24-7, always-on app invites an international public to raise awareness and funds for Stop Ecocide for every mile they walk, run or engage using many popular physical activities.
This partnership will launch on Earth Day, and will culminate in September during U.N. Climate Week, where supporters will have the opportunity to meet in New York for a large-scale walking event.
It is anticipated that partner events will take place to mark this event at other international locations.
Walkers can sign up and download the app HERE and ask their business and social network, employers, friends and family to fund them for every mile walked.
And this means anywhere, at any time.
The concept of criminalizing mass destruction of ecosystems or “ecocide” at a global level has been gaining traction since small island states Vanuatu and the Maldives called for “serious consideration” of it at the International Criminal Court.
Key global voices such as Pope Francis, Greta Thunberg and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres have expressed support and the Belgian government has pledged diplomatic action to support it alongside some of the world’s most climate vulnerable nations.
Discussion of ecocide law is now on public record in 20 countries at the parliamentary and/or government level, and ratification could be possible within three years. See who is leading in this conversation
Stop Ecocide International has been developing cross-sector global support at all levels of government and civil society for this strategic legal initiative to protect the Earth.

“This law will provide the legal guardrail to deter and prevent the worst harms to nature, harms that are at the root of the climate and ecological crisis. It will reframe decision-making at the highest level, enabling the strategic change and innovation needed to safeguard our beautiful planet and our children’s future. The Walk to Stop Ecocide is a brilliant opportunity for citizens to join the movement.”
Julia Jackson
Chair of Stop Ecocide US Allies and founder of Grounded.org
“We want to grow the movement so that every nation supports making ecocide the fifth international crime at the International Criminal Court. This partnership is a way to engage, inspire and empower people all around the world to take part in protecting nature. Time is running out and we need to protect our only home.”
