Title:
Ecocide: An international crime, along with war crimes and crimes against humanity?

Descriptor:
As it becomes clear that Paris Accord commitments will not be met, is it time to define destruction of the environment as a crime that can be prosecuted at the International Criminal Court? International efforts are being directed towards enlarging the ICC’s remit to include a crime of ecocide.

Support comes most forcefully from those nations most immediately vulnerable to climate change, and an official petition has been brought by Vanuatu and the Maldives. But French President Macron has endorsed the idea and international support is broadening.

Would recognition of the crime of ecocide be an effective tool to stop environmental devastation? Would jailing of CEOs, alongside war criminals, bring a change to predatory corporate practices? Or is this effort simply an unnecessary distraction from the more immediate action that the climate crisis demands?
