This panel discussion will bring together national and international legal experts to discuss the advancement of the criminalisation of ecocide as an international crime, to sit alongside crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes in the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
The debate will focus on the proposal of the legal definition of "ecocide" recently published by an independent panel of experts: What are the legal implications of this definition? How can it help address the root causes of the climate and environmental crisis? What are the potential consequences for cases in Germany?

Hermann Ott, lawyer, environmental scientist, head of the German office for ClientEarth, former speaker of the Green Party on climate policy, and honorary board member of the German League for Nature Conservation.
Dr. Christina Voigt, Professor of Law at the University of Oslo, Member of the Independent Expert Panel for the Legal Definition of Ecocide, Chair of the IUCN World Commission on Environmental Law (WCEL).

In dieser Veranstaltung werden nationale und internationale Rechtsexpert:innen zusammentreffen, um über die Weiterentwicklung zur Kriminalisierung von Ökozid als internationales Verbrechen zu debattieren - das neben die Straftatbestände Völkermord, Verbrechen gegen die Menschlichkeit, Kriegsverbrechen und Verbrechen der Aggression im Römischen Statut des Internationalen Strafgerichtshof gelistet werden soll.
Im Mittelpunkt der Debatte wird der kürzlich von einem unabhängigen Expert:innengremium veröffentlichte Vorschlag der Legaldefinition von „Ökozid“ stehen: Welche rechtlichen Implikationen hat diese Definition? Wie kann sie helfen, die Grundursachen der Klima- und Umweltkrise anzugehen? Was sind potentielle Folgen für Fälle in Deutschland?
